Sunset green flash

Sometimes at sunset just as the sun disappears a green flash is visible. I had heard of this phenomena but never seen it until I moved to Bude.
One evening in early summer, walking on Maer Cliffs, I was trying to photograph the last gasp of a drowning sun when I saw a brief green glow where the sun had been. I will never forget that sight because it was so unexpected and made real something that I had found hard to imagine.

Bude is rightly reputed to be one of the best places in the world to view sunsets and any warm clear evening you can guarantee that people start to gather on the downs in front of Atlantic House to watch the sunset. In winter the sun sets behind Compass Point but as the year progresses the sun swings north until it is setting over Maer Cliffs.

Everyone must be familiar with shots of the sun sinking into a shimmering horizon and long to see it for themselves. In reality too often the last few minutes of sun are lost in mist or haze, but when the horizon is perfectly clear Bude sunsets are perfection.

Although Bude is actually the sunniest place in the UK we cannot guarantee clear skies; but what we can offer is one of the best locations in the world for seeing a glorious sunset and perhaps the green flash.
