Bude and surfing are synonymous, because there are numerous surf beaches in the area offering a variety of challenges and characters. There is also a strong community to support the sport, offering very professional training, safety backup and equipment supply.

Bude was influential in establishing surfing in the UK in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Britain’s first Surf Life Saving Club was formed at Crooklets beach because Australians returning home from war service in 1951 had recognised Bude’s potential for surfing. They started the discussions that led to the club being formed in 1953. The enthusiasm, dedication and professionalism of the club members contributes to making Bude both an exciting an d safe place to surf in Cornwall.

Today the most popular locations for learning to surf are the town’s Summerleaze, Crooklets and Widemouth Bay beaches. More adventurous and experienced surfers may go for the quieter and rockier beaches at Duckpool, Sandymouth and NorthCott Mouth.
