The South West Coastal Path

Atlantic House provides a convenient point for serious walkers following the South West Coastal path to break their journey. A favoured schedule involves starting at Hartland Quay or Morwenstow and walking to Atlantic House one day, then leaving the Hotel for Crackington Haven or even Tintagel the next morning. Have no doubts though that this section of the coastal path is the toughest of all because of the large number and ascents and descents involved. For more casual walkers there are trails in and around Bude to suit all abilities.

Popular circular walking routes starting the hotel are:

Widemouth Bay and Helebridge (6 miles)

The walk follows the coastal path south from Bude Widemouth Bay along the cliff tops, passing the folly at Compass Point. The view south stretches to the cliffs beyond Padstow on a really clear day with Tintagel in the middle distance. A useful optional half-way stop is provided by the Bay View Inn at Widemouth. The route back to Bude runs inland from the road just north of the Inn and follows farm roads through the fields to Helebridge and then back along the cycle path, or alternatively the canal path.

Sandymouth via beach and cliffs (5 miles)

This walk starts on Summerleaze beach at low tide and crosses the beaches at Crooklets and Northcott Mouth on route to Sandymouth. From the beach the impressive contorted rock strata of the cliffs are clearly visible, with some of the most impressive being at Sandymouth where there is also a small waterfall onto the beach. Return to Bude walking along the cliff tops for a view to the north as far as Lundy Island in the Bristol Channel. There is a small National Trust cafe at Sandymouth, but not open through winter.

Helebridge (3 miles)

Take the path opposite the Hotel, cross Nanny Moore’s bridge and follow the canal east passing the Tourist Information centre. The canal path takes you past the bird hide at Bude marshes. Kingfishers are among the large number of birds readily seen on route to Helebridge. Stop for a cream tea at the Weir before walking under the A39 to follow the route back along along the cycle path that runs along opposite side of the marshes from the canal.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
